“We knew perfectly that coming to England to play against England will be very difficult for us, and we were aware of the fact that we will have to suffer. We struggled a lot, but we did all this together as a team. Everyone made a huge sacrifice, especially the strikers who ran a lot and helped the team a lot by being the first line in defense. We suffered in some situations in the first half on the right side where England succeeded in breaking our line, so the opponent got behind our midfielders and our defense, so in some situations, we were lucky. Of course, you can never achieve a result like this if you are not lucky. We were lucky, but we also put all our efforts on the pitch. We tried to follow all the tactical indications without exceptions, without selfish attitudes. We helped each other and worked together as a team. When Hungary is able to play together, it is difficult for every opponent to win against us, but of course, we need to keep our feet on the ground because, at this moment, we have seven points after playing against England twice. Nobody expected that we would lead the group after four matches. So, I'm really happy for the guys, I'm happy for all the staff, I'm happy for the country and for the fans, of course.”
The Hungarian national team had never beaten England in a competitive match at home before, so the team made history with Tuesday night's victory.
“I told our president [Sándor Csányi, President of the Hungarian Football Federation] and also to our prime minister [Viktor Orbán] that when I first took this position, I said I wanted to like to leave a mark of my presence before leaving. And I think it has already happened. Sooner or later, everybody will die. This is the only thing that is really democratic in the world. So, when I die, which I hope reaches me as late as possible, I'm sure in Hungary, in the stadiums, I will have a whole minute of silence. This is a very good achievement for me.”
The head coach was also asked about the English national team's performance.
“The reason why I say we were lucky is that we almost scored in every situation we had while England had much more than us. And for one reason or another, they didn't manage to score a goal. This kind of evening can happen sometimes, but rarely. I'm convinced that England is among the best teams in the world. In the World Cup, they are one of the favorites, so being able to have this kind of result here tonight is something that sounds like a miracle. And if a miracle happens in football, it is difficult to repeat it, so, we are happy for tonight, but we need to keep our feet on the ground.”
“To be honest, not only be but also my staff, my professional staff, and technical staff still haven't realized what we had done in these 10 days. Things change quickly in football. I'm sure that in September, we will play against Germany and Italy again. Italy is the team that defeated us in this year's Nations League. But since I'm Italian, I gave them a nice present... Joke aside, Hungary hasn't been on the level it used to be in the past, and it still isn't, but we are talking about a country that loves sports. We are happy to give moments of joy to our fans. When was I sure of the victory? When the referee gave one minute of extra time. In that moment, I was sure that we could manage the victory. The guys celebrated in the dressing room singing Hungarian songs. Tomorrow evening I'm going to attend the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert.”
